I was assigned to her on a labor law (damages only) trial last Spring which went to verdict. She was on the Civil Court bench before moving up to Supreme Court. She tried our case in Judge Steinhardts old courtroom at the infamous end of the 4th floor, so we were unable to use the large smart television setup (they cant move one up the stairs). If the Judge has not moved to another courtroom or has not found a sufficiently sized ramp, you will have to as we did old school it (projector/screen or posterboards).
She is smart and intuitive but did not seem very experienced in civil PI (and I would assume, med mal) cases. However she wont make off the cuff decisions and knows when to ask for case law support when ruling on motions in limine or even certain issues that arose during the trial. Only one near ruling was a head scratcher, when she seemed inclined to give the plaintiff a missing witness charge for one of our examining doctors who retired and did not testify even though plaintiffs counsel failed to establish with her own client that the IME ever took place. Fortunately, plaintiffs counsel withdrew the request (surely to prevent an appeal) and we avoided that problem.
She will rope in overly verbose our unduly cagey witnesses (she will strike unresponsive portions of answers when did you last see that happen?) and she does not permit attorneys to overly grandstand when cross examining witnesses. In general, she will pay attention to what was covered on direct, what was gone into on cross and will stop an attorney from either side who strays beyond those parameters on redirect/recross. However, both counsel in our case were for the most part respectful to each other and to the Court, so we didnt really test her too much on most issues.
She will likely need some assistance with med mal nuances so be armed with case law if needed and Im sure she will read it. All in all, she was a good assignment and I hope that she remains independent and fair minded as she tries more of these cases.
